Indu Sarkar kicks up a storm

Madhur Bhandarkar had launched the trailer of the movie Indu Sarkar just a couple of days back and the movie has already kicked up a storm. The backdrop of the movie is Indira Gandhi’s declaration of Emergency in India during the 21-month period from 1975 to 1977.  It stars Kirti Kulhari, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Supriya Vinod and Anupam Kher. Kirti plays a stammering poetess in the movie, which is a fictional human drama, but Inspired by true events.

Members of Indian National Congress are not very happy and calling it a propaganda movie. While talking about the subject ace director, Madhur Bhandarkar shared, “If Indu Sarkar was sponsored by a political party, then I would have made the film right before 2019 elections or at least before the elections in the five states that happened earlier this year. I don’t have any agenda with this movie, it is a emotional story with a historical backdrop”.

It is noteworthy, that there are countless books and documentaries that are made with Emergency as the subject but why the movie on this subject is causing such a debate is a question to be pondered. About 70 per cent of the movie consists of fictional elements and a mere 30 percent of the based on the facts that have been well documented and have been sourced from report of Shah Commission.

Commenting on the movie ban, Bhandarkar said, “I am against any ban, from movies to books to any piece of art. I supported Anurag Kashyap for Udta Punjab, no one sensationalised me then. I have even supported Karan Johar, I just believe in films and in cinema.”

Indu Sarkar is presented by Bharat Shah, produced by Bhandarkar Entertainment and Mega Bollywood. It is releasing on July 28, 2017.
